Britain was at the dynamic heart of the 19th-century world, which might explain why the experimental art of photography was enthusiastically taken up by so many pioneers. The Lady Lever Art Gallerys exhibition of Victorian photographs includes images of the celebrities of the time, such as Charles Dickens and the politician William Gladstone, as well as the masses enjoying a day out on Yarmouth Sands. It also features work by female artists such as Julia Margaret Cameron (right), who escaped the social restrictions of the time to produce photographs that echo Pre-Raphaelite painters with their intensely romantic focus on female subjects. Just as some animals will offer in courtship a morsel of food, the bowerbird and others make gifts of feathers and flowers and all manner of colorful trifles. There can be tittle doubt that the first tokens of human affection were of a simitar nature and were worn as treasured souvenirs. With the recognition of the intrinsic qualities of shelfs and stones, the evolution of jewely had begun. In the Middle Ages patronage was largely in the hands of the church, and a good proportion of medieval jewelry is of a devotional nature. Not until the second half of the fifteenth century was there an emphasis on the aphrodisian themes of antiquity. The refinement of Italian Renaissance jewelry was a result of the broadly based apprenticeship of artists, which required a mastery of drawing, engraving, chasing, casting, enameling, and niello work. Thus Donatello and Ghiberti became sculptors, Ghirlandaio and Andrea del Sarto became painters, and Pollaiuolo and Verrocchio worked in several mediums, returning to goldsmith work and jewelry at will. The fashion for decorative emblems and badges was taken up with enthusiasm in the courts of Europe during the Renaissance. Both devotional and amorous allusions are common in these decorative devices, which closely echo contemporary jewel work. One of the most charming designs for an emblem shows Cupid rashly pursuing the sweetness of the honeycomb only to be stung by the bees who have made it (Pl. XIII), a poignant allegory of the pleasure and pain of love. The Netherlandish hat badge in Plate IX is an emblem depicting a woman choosing between two suitors surrounded by a motto that can be translated “love is something but money is everything.”

Steel fibres are gradually becoming an established reinforcement option of choice for prefabricated elements and structures. Their use increases the load-bearing capacity and durability of individual construction elements, and Hochtiefs prefabricated garage system has now received the approval of the German Institute for Construction Technology in Berlin. Formwork systems and process engineering are subject to continuous rationalisation. The Hochtief Group has two computer-controlled automated formwork machines that permit the fabrication of over 300 variable garage and modular unit systems. For safety and quality reasons, the company decided to base its application for approval on destructive testing rather than on computational methods. The results confirmed the work of the engineers, who took into account the conditions established by the new automated formwork equipment. A system of ground fixture and stabilisation suitable for all garage types was simultaneously developed. In August last year, this work gained Hochtief approval from the German Institute for Construction Technology for its steel fibre-reinforced concrete garage systems.
Appliance garages have little doors that flip up, open up, or roll up. They fit between base cabinets and wall cabinets, and theyre used to hide a coffeemaker, mixer, and other kitchen clutter. Its a great concept, except the garages usually take away valuable counterspace.Three, 25-inch-wide doors flip up and slide back out of the way on tracks. The tracks are a standard cabinet hardware item.)For extra countertop space and to accommodate a warming oven mounted below, the center portion of the base cabinet and counter is pulled forward an extra 4 inches.

FREQUENCY: Do this workout two days a week for four weeks, resting at least two to three days between exercise sessions. Perform the workout as a circuit, doing one set each of exercises 1-6 before resting. (Thats one circuit.) Repeat for a total of four circuits. REPETITIONS AND WEIGHTS: Do three repetitions of each exercise, using a weight that you can lift at most five times. (That is, youll do three repetitions using a weight equal to your five-repetition maximum for each exercise.) REST PERIODS: In week 1, youll rest for 60 seconds after each circuit, 50 seconds in week 2, and 40 seconds in weeks 3 and 4.
A recent study conducted by the University of Florida reveals that one set of weightlifting reps produces 98 percent of the same benefits as multiple sets. These study results are no surprise to Bernie Miller, an athletic trainer and former American Gladiator who has been training clients this way since 1985.

ADVERTISING MEDIAAUDIORadio stations feature many different programming emphases. These range from music-oriented formats such as country, adult contemporary, classic rock, and alternative rock to news-or talk-oriented formats. Since these different formats attract different demographic segments of the total audience, business owners can take appreciable measures to reach their target audience simply by buying time on appropriate stations. Another major advantage of radio advertising is that it is inexpensive to place and to produce, allowing small business owners to place advertisements on more than one station in a given market. In addition, radio advertising content can be changed quickly to meet changes in the market or to reflect new business objectives. Finally, radio reaches large numbers of commuters, income-generating people who often pay more attention to radio advertising than to other advertising media, especially if they are driving alone.

TransportationHistorically, societies have always located near water, due partly to the fact that water enables more efficient travel compared to going over land. Waterways are critically important to the transportation of people and goods throughout the world. The complex network of connections between coastal ports, inland ports, rail, air, and truck routes forms a foundation of material economic wealth worldwide.
TRANSPORTATIONThe decisions a business owner must make regarding transportation of products are closely related to a number of other distribution issues. For example, the accessibility of suitable means of transportation factors into decisions regarding where best to locate a business or facility. The means of transportation chosen will also affect decisions regarding the form of packing used for products and the size or frequency of shipments made. Although transportation costs may be reduced by sending larger shipments less frequently, it is also necessary to consider the costs of holding extra inventory. The interrelationship of these decisions means that successful planning and scheduling can help business owners to save on transportation costs.

AsbestosThe earliest known use of asbestos was in about 2500 B.C. in what is now Finland, where asbestos fibers were mixed with clay to form stronger ceramic utensils and pots. The first written reference to asbestos came from Greece in about 300 B.C. when Theophrastus, one of Aristotles students, wrote a book entitled On Stones. In his book, he mentioned an unnamed mineral substance, which looked like rotten wood, yet was not consumed when doused with oil and ignited. The Greeks used it to make lamp wicks and other fireproof items. When the Roman naturalist and statesman Pliny the Elder wrote his comprehensive Natural History in about 60 A.D. , he described this fire-proof mineral and gave it the name asbestinon, meaning unquenchable, from which we get the English word asbestos.

Despite 2000s slow-motion finale, the home video category showed little sign of lost luster, thanks to a new format and the resilience of the entertainment industry. Old and new formats–VHS and DVD–vied for precious shelf space in drug chains. By the end of the year, VHS remained the dominant format, but as CVS spokesman Michael DiAngelis recently noted, the increasing affordability of the hardware has helped increase household penetration for DVD. More drug chain customers are buying DVDs, as was evident in a study by New York City-based research firm Alexander Associates, which tracks VHS and DVD products. Its latest study of store-data (excluding on-line and catalog sales) showed that in 2000 the drug channels DVD unit volume grew from 1.1 percent of all retail units sold in 1999 to 2.4 percent of units sold. Meanwhile, VHS unit sales in the drug channel declined slightly from 1.8 percent in 1999 to 1.7 percent of retail units sold in 2000, according to Greg Durkin, research director for Alexander Associates. As noted in a previous issue of Drug Store News, the five top VHS sellers for 2000 were mainly family titles, headed by bestseller Tarzan (Buena Vista), followed by Star Wars: Episode 1 (Fox), Toy Story 2 (Buena Vista), Stuart Little (Columbia TriStar), and Little Mermaid IV: Return to the Sea (Buena Vista), according to Video Business magazine.
Some of the major home video distribution companies business is expected to drop by 20% to 25% once Warner goes direct, according to published reports.

Highlights and Key Issues * Evidence is mounting that Spain is set for a rocky ride because of the property crisis. We expect GDP growth of 2.3% this year - in line with the Bank of Spain - and for the housing market woes to weigh further on growth in 2009. Spains newly elected Socialist government has pledged to approve a euro22bn package of tax rebates and employment programmes to stave off the risk of recession. The government is in a good fiscal position and can afford to pass a large stimulus. * A further blow to consumer spending could come from higher inflation. CPI inflation rose to 4.5% in March, pushed by high energy and food prices. However, as demand moderates and the effect of energy prices slips out of the calculation we expect inflation to drop back in H2. However, it is likely to remain above 3%.
Economic growth is likely to slow in 2008 and 2009, as residential construction falls. Private consumption may decelerate, reflecting lower employment gains and tighter credit conditions. From a peak in late 2007, inflation should decline as demand pressures moderate. Growth decelerated slightly in the third quarter, although it remained at a still robust pace. Domestic demand growth edged lower, as consumption and construction, which have been the main drivers of the long running expansion, were less dynamic, while machinery and equipment spending remained strong, stimulated by buoyant corporate profits and robust foreign demand. As both exports and imports accelerated, external demand maintained its negative contribution to real GDP. After hovering around 2 1/4 per cent for the first half of the year, headline inflation has risen to 3.6%, significantly higher than the euro-area average, driven mainly by oil and food prices. Vigorous job creation has pushed the unemployment rate down to 8%. Nonetheless, real wage gains have remained moderate.

The pin-hole camera picks up the man knocking on the door of a council flat. The fuzzy edge of the circular image lends a covert feel to the scene, which is being taped for use as evidence. The on-screen time stamp ticks over as the bearded man bends to call through the letter- box. A moment later a man opens the door and ushers in the visitor. Is this a buyer visiting his drug dealer? Or just one friend calling on another? The time-lapse video monitors the flat 24 hours a day. A neighbour has complained of slamming doors at all times of the day and night. The council has to check the allegation and gather evidence to use in court, if necessary. The complainant is too scared to testify against the tenants, so the council is using private detectives to search for information. Phil works for Burgess PDQ, a detective agency that his father, Steve, runs from a three-room office suite near Manchesters main shopping area. The agencys first taste of council work came 18 months ago when Salford wanted to gather information on a nuisance case. Since then the agency has investigated cases involving drugs, noise, harassment and car crime.

A happy outcome in standalone tower systems–easily the most popular category of duplicator hardware–is that while the number of recorders integrated into each tower continues to increase, steeply declining 4X recorder prices and fierce competition have substantially lowered overall system prices. Seven- and eight-recorder configurations are now common in larger units and these systems sell for thousands of dollars less than five- and six-recorder models of only a year ago. Improvements in chaining technology permit massively parallel systems to duplicate hundreds of discs simultaneously. Features, such as multiple disc images on hard drives, audio read-back verification, and digital and analog audio importation that were once the domain of only expensive host-base systems, are now available in some economical standalone devices. The market for smaller duplicators is also steadily growing with impressive demand for compact one-to-one copiers and slightly larger units housing up to four recorders. Given the recent introductions of inexpensive 4X EIDE/ATAPI recorders, the declining costs of smaller systems will continue to push them into the corporate market where floppy diskette duplicators never really found a home.
LaCie has made available the Dupli-123, its new CD duplicator that is equipped with one CD-ROM drive and three 8×20x CD-R drives. Designed to cope with professional needs the new device can simultaneously record three full CD-Rs in less than nine minutes, functioning either autonomously without the need of software and computer or connected to a workstation to enable the user to customise CDs and share drives across the network.

A proposal now being considered by the U.S. Senate would impose new liability standards and regulations on debtors attorneys in bankruptcy cases. If these standards become law, they could impact many debtors bankruptcy attorneys, along with attorneys who work for programs funded by Legal Services Corp. or other legal aid programs, and attorneys who provide pro bono bankruptcy representation. The new measure, which is similar to legislation that was approved by the House of Representatives last year, H.R. 975/S. 1920, would require debtors attorneys to:

RADIO / TV
Augmented by multiinstrumentalist Dave Sitek and guitarist Kyp Malone, Adebimpes soaring, malleable vocals draw on Enoesque soundscapes as much as American indie rock, with dashes of Fifties street-corner doo-wop thrown in. Their debut album, Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes, was lo-fi and pretty hardcore, but soon attracted them big-name fans. David Bowie declared TV on the Radio his favourite new act, and his voice is buried with honours among the backing vocals of their second album, the superb Return to Cookie Mountain. Their gig at Koko is the last of a three-city dash through the UK before a short European tour. The original trio of Adebimpe, Sitek and Malone is augmented by bassist Jaleel Bunton and drummer Gerard Smith, and the crowd greet them like conquering heroes. Drawing on their latest album, this is an exhilarating show of heavy rock and heavy beats, mixed with electronic feedback, choreographed into a stream of consciousness. Between Afro-haired Malone and Adebimpe, they work up some good, ragged harmony vocals, and the epic choruses struggle out of their New York street clothes on songs like “Wolf Like Me”. “I Was a Lover”, the albums opener, is a stand-out track live, a great combination of drones, drums and bass, with strong vocals to match. The song lyrics are vivid, visceral, and weird in an out-of-joint way. Towards the end, the band are joined by a rag-tag of guests banging on hand percussion, while Tunde experiments with the public- address tones of a load-hailer. The sound of sirens soon follows, vocals veering between hip-hop rhythms and grungy howls, while abstract guitar pulses with the electronic backdrop of drones and alarms. It could easily be a case of too much going on in one place at once, but it works.

article marketing

Not a day goes by without yet another article extolling the virtues of the Internet. An estimated 30 million worldwide users to date and more logging on every day. To the small business owner, the real question is, Where does the hype end and the reality begin? Is the Internet really a viable proposition for the traditional small business, normally constrained by lack of time, staff and money? 10 questions to ask yourself The best way to determine whether or not the Internet makes sense for your business is to apply a simple “yes” or “no” answer to 10 important marketing questions: 1. Do my clients require specific product information before they can buy my product/service? 2. Do I spend a majority of my time selling the benefits of my product only to be asked, “Can you send me more information?” 3. Is my long-distance phone bill more than $100 per month? 4. Have I lost business as a result of playing phone tag with a potential customer because I was unable to “sieze the moment?” 5. Would a new employee handling sales paperwork free me to increase my companys revenues? 6. Is there an international market for my product? 7. Does my product have a story to tell? 8. Am I spending more than 20 percent of every dollar I make on marketing-related expenses? 9. Would instant customer feedback benefit my business? 10. Would the ability to capture orders 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, help my business? If you answered “yes” to just one of these questions, you should at least explore the possibilities that Internet commerce can offer. If you answered “yes” to five or more, you should dedicate some serious time and resources to finding out how the Internet actually works (and how it can work for you). If you answered “yes” to eight or more of the questions, you need a fast-track education about the Internet before your competitors claim the medium for themselves. The smart small business owner will make plans to explore the Internet, find out what the Web can deliver and then formulate a strategy to exploit it. As Jeff Vick, Marketing Specialist at Creative Video explains, “The Internet will do to business in the 21st century what the telephone did to business in the 20th century.” The Web — How does it work? According to Vick, the Internet works well as a commercial sales tool for businesses that need to exchange information in order to specify a particular products size, color, model, price, etc. Multiple orders can be booked, billed and fulfilled through a simple response mechanism included on an Internet site. Much of this information can be communicated through the Web. While it is actually only one portion of the Internet, the Web serves as an extensive reference library that can provide any level of additional information about a particular subject, issue, item or product. As in a spiders web configuration, the Web provides an ever-increasing source of interlocking information about the subject in question. Simply point and click and you can dive deeper into additional layers of information. The Web also has certain features that make it ideal for marketing. It can display pictures and massive amounts of text about your product as well as send and receive order information while at the same time generating a receipt. If your product requires a lengthy explanation in order to communicate its benefits, the Web is the place to do it. Customers and prospects can view that information at their own pace — in many instances, via sophisticated video and audio commercials. Since were talking digital information here, there is very little difference between one word and one thousand words. And if you feel that youre spending too much time processing paperwork and not enough time selling, a well-designed Web page may be one of the potential keys to your businesses future success. How important is e-mail? An important byproduct of the Internet is e-mail, or electronic mail. Once you learn to use this valuable tool, youll wonder how you ever got along without it. Forget about what time it is, or whether its “worth a call” — with e-mail, it costs no more to send a message to Sydney that it does to Syracuse (the actual cost is about $1.00 an hour). And time zones become irrelevant as well. You and the recipient can view the messages at your convenience, thereby eliminating the dreaded game of telephone tag. So get serious! How does the smart business operator approach the formidable and intimidating task of investigating the Net? First, gather your thoughts as to what you would like your Web site to accomplish. Imagine that your customer can ask you anything he/she wants to know about your company and product — anything from product price to employee birthdays — and in no particular order. Analyze each possible scenario and list all the information relevant to it. Then, and only then, begin to organize the scenarios into a flow chart. Once you have the flow chart polished, try to find flaws in it. If your customer is browsing through the pricing section of your flow chart, will he/she be more interested in going to shipping next or reading your companys mission statement? After you feel that youve developed a solid grasp of the different portions of the business that youd like to present to your clientele, you are now ready to interview potential agencies who are skilled in creating Web pages. According to Vick, there are 3 questions you should ask a potential Web page creator: 1. Have you done this before? 2. Who have you done this for? 3. May I call them? While creating some Web pages may require the skills of a computer Ph.D., most will not, and there are competent companies in most major markets capable of accomplishing the task in a cost-effective fashion. Prices for creating a simple Web site can range from a low of $2,500 to high of $20,000. In fact, some of the Fortune 500 marketers have created sophisticated and complex Web pages that can literally run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and in some cases, the millions. But for the average small business, the investment will probably be in the $5,000 to $10,000 range. And remember, you must keep your Web site content fresh, or your prospects will have no reason to come back. Seeing your own World Wide Web site up and running on the Internet can be a proud moment for any business owner. It also can mean the start of a whole new way of doing business. It has the potential to increase productivity by extending operating time to a full 24 hours a day. But this will only happen if your business really needs this technology and can use it effectively. Evaluate your situation honestly. If its right for you, acquire it. If its not, save the money. And if you want to see what its all about, contact a Web creator and ask to see a demonstration. Concrete Garages

25 Aug 2008 | Tagged as: Uncategorized

Appliance garages have little doors that flip up, open up, or roll up. They fit between base cabinets and wall cabinets, and theyre used to hide a coffeemaker, mixer, and other kitchen clutter. Its a great concept, except the garages usually take away valuable counterspace.Three, 25-inch-wide doors flip up and slide back out of the way on tracks. The tracks are a standard cabinet hardware item.)For extra countertop space and to accommodate a warming oven mounted below, the center portion of the base cabinet and counter is pulled forward an extra 4 inches.
Garage Olimpo directed by Marco Bechis Garage Olimpo is set in Buenos Aires sometime during the military dictatorship. Then, between 1976 and 1982, 7,000 `opponents of the regime `disappeared. Many were drugged and dumped alive from military transport planes into the southern Atlantic. Director Bechis is one of the more fortunate victims of the regime — he escaped abroad. With co-writer Lara Fremder hes produced a claustrophobic and disturbing political drama. Maria is a literacy teacher and political activist. She lives with her mother and their lodger, Felix, who works at a garage. Felix is infatuated with her. When Maria is arrested shes taken to a prison and interrogation centre — the converted Olimpo garage — where torture is routine, degrading and brutal, designed to extract information quickly so that others can be arrested. There she encounters Felix, who is in fact a covert `counter-terrorist soldier. He is assigned to interrogate her. The film tracks their relationship: he exploits the situation to possess and control her; she uses his obsession as a means of survival. The portrayal of the torturer, not as monstrous or psychotic, but as spiritually impoverished, a man who is emotionally isolated and imprisoned, resists the dehumanization that is implicit in torture. Maria, meanwhile, parodies the traditional social role of women, but ultimately affirms endurance and enduring human values. Garage Olimpo is well-made, politically complex and hard-hitting. A fine film.

The biggest challenge for us as the New Generation is that we live in a very fast-paced world. Things are constantly changing and the ability to adapt has become essential for survival in our world of speed. One of the ways we can stay on track in our current culture is through NLP (NeuroLinguistic Programming). Research has proven that NLP is one of the most effective ways of behaviour modification. One of my colleagues, who finished his PHD in NLP, came to the conclusion that as a Psychologist, NLP serves as the best model for changing behaviour to adapt to our world of speed.

STARSHIP TROOPERS (15) What better way to start the new film year than with the latest blood- soaked, limb-cracking epic adventure about a do-or-die battle to save the world from unspeakable otherworldly aliens? Sounds familiar? No, not More Men In Black or Independence Day 2. Anyone with a passing knowledge of those bad Hollywood B-movies of the Fifties will easily recognise the basic formula of this gleefully inflated Nineties variety of the species as a team of well-scrubbed, cliche-spouting all-American heroes take on disgusting giant bugs from the distant Planet Klendathu.

The authors note that there have been 13 studies which used prospective randomized control designs which compared hypnosis either to baseline level noiception or to a control condition of some sort. These studies consistently demonstrate that hypnosis can assist patients with chronic pain with a reduction in their pain experience and pain related coping for a variety of chronic pain conditions. Hypnosis was generally found to be more effective than other nonpharmacological interventions such as physical therapy, attention, and psychoeducative strategies. The intervention which was most commonly employed was training in self-hypnosis. The authors provide a critique of these studies in that there appears to be a lack of standardization in the uses of hypnotic interventions in these clinical trials and also that the treatment group numbers tended to be lower than one might desire. The authors also provide a number of very useful suggestions for future research and clinical application of hypnosis to assisting patients with chronic pain syndromes. The final report features a timeline of events at the denominations annual meeting, listing “miscommunications and misunderstandings” at a Leadership Development Conference in Dallas for youth of color the week preceding General Assembly; a failure to reserve hotels for youth near the convention center; incidents in which GA participants mistook UU youth of color for hotel staff; harassment by Fort Worth police; and a confrontation between three youth of color and a white UU minister at the assemblys closing ceremony. It also offers “The Elevator Story,” an account of an emotionally charged incident on the last night of GA viewed from two very different perspectives.
The stage last week for three Democratic state Assembly hopefuls was a College of San Mateo classroom with three blue plastic chairs arranged tightly beneath the whiteboard. The audience was about 30 students, some bleary-eyed for the 10 a.m. Thursday class but filling every seat for Political Science 310: “California State and Local Government.” And the stump speeches were generally predictable in one of the early debates among San Mateo County Supervisor Jerry Hill, Millbrae Mayor Gina Papan and community college district Trustee Richard Holober.

Political Economy of Money and Finance Macmillan, London; and St. Martins Press, New York, 1999. This is an exceedingly important book. it is probably the most important contribution to the Marxian theory of money, credit and finance to appear in English since the translation of Suzanne de Brunhoffs Marx on Money in 1976. Itoh and Lapavitsas book includes a wealth of information, superb literature reviews, profound analyses of the historical evidence and substantiated discussions of controversial policy issues, whose digestion will keep even the most demanding readers busy for a long time. Their argument is invariably thorough, and their research ranges widely, and admirably, from the logical and historical origins of money to free banking, and from long wave theories to socialist money. In spite of its virtues, and partly because of them, this book will probably not become an icon of the literature, although it will certainly become a major reference in the field (which may well be a better option). The reason is simple: Itoh and Lapavitsas probe very deeply into Marxs theory of money and credit, marshal evidence widely, and engage in a wide variety of debates, not least with Marx himself (eg., they criticise certain aspects of Marxs theory of money, on pp.37-40, and credit, on pp.64-5). As their work is very ambitious, complex and controversial, it is unlikely to be universally acclaimed.

The Fitness Training Unit (FTU) is a specialized training element with the mission of improving the fitness level of new recruits before basic combat training (BCT). Individuals are assigned to the FTU if they do not pass a special Reception Station Physical Fitness Test administered within 1 or 2 days of arrival. If trainees pass the test, they go on directly to BCT. Test criteria at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, during the summer of 1998 are listed in Table I. The goals of the FTU are to better prepare new trainees for the physical demands of BCT and to reduce injuries during BCT. Trainees who enter the FTU perform a specific physical training program, which includes running, weight training, push-up and sit-up improvement, road marching, and developmental stretching. They also participate in military training, such as customs and courtesies, drill and ceremony, wearing of the uniform, Uniformed Code of Military Justice, and Army values. Criteria to exit the FrU and go on to BCT differ from the initial test and are also listed in Table I (summer 1998). If a trainee was sent to the FTU for a push-up or sit-up failure, he or she could go on to BCT after passing the exit criteria for that event; tests are given three times per week. If the trainee was a run failure in the summer of 1998, he or she had to stay in the FTU for a mandatory 3-week period and pass the exit criteria before entry to BCT.
Strength training is without doubt crucial to any and every fitness ambition. Successful weight loss, cardiovascular ability, sports participation, and even improvement in everyday functional fitness all hinge upon regular strength training. If that holds true for you, the following weight-free exercises can simplify the process a bit. They work by using your own body weight as a form of resistance. All youll need is an armless chair and a stairwell railing or doorknob. Once youve warmed up and stretched, work the muscles of the upper abdomen with an abdominal crunch. Lie on the floor with your knees lifted directly above your hips, bend at a 90-degree angle and your hands clasped behind your head.
Physical fitness has been shown to be a critical element in the success of new recruits who enter basic combat training (BCT). Individuals who have a low level of physical fitness on arrival at BCT have been shown to be more susceptible to injury1,2 and more likely to be discharged3 than their more-fit counterparts. Multivariate analysis of discharge risk factors suggested that physical fitness might be even more important than the classic indicator of discharge risk, educational level.3,4 In 1998, Fort Jackson, South Carolina, recognized the importance of initial physical fitness in BCT and established a minimal physical fitness requirement for entrance to BCT.5 A fitness test program had existed since 1987, but the only passing requirement for entry to BCT in that early program was 1 push-up (PU) for women and 13 PUs for men.6 In October 1998, the test was changed to a three-event evaluation that included PUs, sit-ups (SUs), and a 1-mile run. In October 1999, fitness standards for entry to BCT were mandated by the Army Training and Doctrine Command for all five locations where Army BCT was conducted.7 Between October 1999 and May 2004, new recruits arriving for BCT were given the entry-level physical fitness test at the BCT reception station and could not enter BCT until they met the standards shown in Table I. After May 2004, the entrylevel fitness test was no longer conducted at the reception station. It became the responsibility of Army recruiters to administer the test to new recruits, and recruits did not ship to their BCT training site until they passed the test.

Over the years the concept of medical necessity has evolved to encompass a multitude of medical management strategies. Essentially, in terms of the contract language, medical necessity has become a workhorse concept to determine coverage eligibility. In the process, the interpretation of the term has taken on various guises and a variety of processes have been used to define medical necessity. The following discussion highlights the variable uses of the concept of medical necessity. 1. Determining the most appropriate intensity of service and place of service
The national survey of more than 2,000 adults was conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality The survey also showed that Americans rely on the recommendations of friends and family more than standardized quality indicators when selecting a health care provider, and people have little confidence that employers will give reliable information about the quality of health care providers. And despite the undeniable draw of the Internet, people still trust doctors and pharmacists more than advertisements and the Web for information on prescription medications, the survey shows.

Its been a long rime since I have reviewed gopher control in the vineyard. Its appropriate, given the time of year, so I thought we would take a look at it this month. All three rodents damage vines by chewing on them. New plantings and established vines are susceptible to both root damage and girdling. In addition to plant damage, these rodents will also move enough dirt to redirect water away from vines and literally into a hole in the ground. Ground squirrels specifically will chew drip lines and damage emitters. I have observed squirrels chewing things for no other reason than the fact that they are there. Control of these pests is broken into three fairly broad categories: biological, chemical and trapping.

The aim is only to allow diplomats to carry out their functions with security and confidentiality, and also to recognise diplomats function as representatives of their country. It does not grant them freedom to flout local law, although they may be immune to local jurisdiction to enforce such laws. Contrary to a widespread belief, a diplomatic mission is not “extra-territorial”: it is, however, given the protection of inviolability within the receiving state. This rule refers to its premises and diplomatic dispatches. But all privileges and immunities are solely directed towards facilitating performance of diplomatic missions.

Negotiating The Fraud Exclusion It is important for policyholders to understand, however, that the exact wording of the exclusion can differ substantially from policy to policy. This can have important practical ramifications for directors and officers. For example, in some instances, the terms of the exclusion may allow an insurance company to refuse to provide a director or officer with a defense to a claim in a lawsuit asserting fraud; the director or officer therefore will be obligated to retain and pay for his or her own attorney. In other situations, the exclusion only may prohibit an insurance company from indemnifying a director or officer once fraud has been proven in the underlying lawsuit; the director or officer is much more likely to avoid having to pay any costs out-of-pocket with this form of the exclusion.

PROVO — The monkey is finally off BYUs back. On Friday, the Cougars (2-12-1) ended their 12-game losing streak by knocking off the Boulder Rapids Reserves 2-1 in overtime. “I have a whole new appreciation for winning now,” BYU coach Chris Watkins said. “It is neat to be rewarded with three points at the end of the day. “Clearly we are getting better. We had our window of opportunity and we finally jumped through it.” It was BYU reserve Chris Lamb who helped the Cougars through that window.
OREM — Brooks Shankle, the Orem Owlz reserve first baseman, hasnt had many chances this season to deliver a game-winning hit. And playing in only 15 of Orems 37 games, he also has had much need for redemption. But for a short time Saturday he was looking like the goat after dropping a throw from pitcher Aaron Cook in the eighth inning, an error that resulted in a key run for the Idaho Falls Chukars and had the game knotted heading into Orems final at bat. Shankle entered the game hitting only .170 and was hitless Saturday prior to the clutch game-winner. It was only his third RBI of the season.

The Journal Sentinel staff Lauren Essig is going to prom tonight, but shes less than thrilled about it. “My date is on prom court, so Im going, and its my last dance at high school,” Essig said. ASHBURN, Ga. — For the first time, the faces of students at the Turner County High School prom were both white and black. Each year, in spite of integration, the schools white students had raised money for their own unofficial prom and black students did the same to throw their own separate party, an annual ritual that divided the southern Georgia peanut-farming county anew each spring. That all changed Saturday as horse-drawn carriages and stretch limousines carried young couples around the downtown streets to a single prom.

As in the past, the goal of this Clinic is to describe for out readers surgical techniques and treatments proven to be successful. This feature is expected to be of interest both to the seasoned surgeon and the beginner. The Facial Plastic Surgery Clinic will feature color photographs and illustrations. It will offer the opportunity to all otolaryngologists and plastic surgeons who have mastered a unique technique or found a better way to solve a problem to submit their ideas to this Clinic, to demonstrate them to their colleagues. I welcome Dr. Mobley to the ENT JOURNAL and look forward to the continuing success of the Facial Plastic Surgery Clinic.
The demand for more education and real people to share their experiences with plastic surgery has grown incredibly all over the world, explained Dr. Mayer, co-director with Richard Fleming, M.D. of the Beverly Hills Institute of Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery. We are excited to participate in a show like Cosmetic Surgery Live, which takes the epicenter of beauty (LA) to the United Kingdom. Dr. Mayer will perform a new FDA-approved procedure called the ENDOTINE Cheek Lift which is ideal for patients ages 35-50 who are not looking for a radical makeover, but a more understated rejuvenation that brings them back 7-10 years. With its five points of contact and absorbable features, the new ENDOTINE device gives patients natural, long-lasting results. It also enhances cheek volume - key to obtaining a more youthful appearance. During a cheeklift procedure using ENDOTINE, a half-inch incision is made inside a crows foot alongside the lower eye. Once the underlying muscle and tissue has been elevated to lift the cheek area, the new ENDOTINE Mid Face is placed to capture and elevate the cheek, securing it into the bone and holding it in position until the soft tissue re-adheres to the cheek bone entirely. The ENDOTINE gradually absorbs completely, at which time the tissue is securely attached to the cheekbone lifting the mid-face.

In the populous state of California, DCs have taken a huge hit in workers compensation claims. Meanwhile, other states are rearranging their personal injury laws. I thought this subject matter would make for a nice “interview.” The following is what I would say if asked for my thoughts on the current state of affairs in personal injury trends and what the future holds for chiropractic practitioners. A: I think that in order to understand the big picture, you need to parse out the contributions of the major players in this business, if I can call it that. The players are the insurers, the lawyers, the doctors, the various experts sometimes relied upon during the litigation process, the government and, most importantly, the victims of trauma. Q: Lets start with insurers - what are their contributions to the current personal injury environment?
Growth in exposure prompts change in coverage provision Are your homeowners clients concerned about their exposure to personal injury claims? They should be, especially if they have adolescent children. In the Internet age, however, the potential for personal injury claims has increased substantially. Thanks to the global reach of e-mail, blogs, and shared sites such as MySpace and YouTube, damaging comments can be instantly transmitted to millions of people throughout the world and live on, so to speak, in electronic files that may never be fully expunged.
In a personal injury action, defendant sought a partial summary judgment in Fellenz v. Luedtke Engineering Co. U.S. Magistrate Judge Jonathan W. Feldman denied the motion due to the fact that New York case law is not clear on applying Labor Law Section 241(6) to the type of work plaintiff was doing, nor is it clear that the observable danger would absolve defendant from liability under Section 200 of the Labor Law.Plaintiff Fellenz was employed by the Army Corps as the projects construction inspector and representative. His duties included observing the progress of the work, insuring that the break wall construction met specifications, completing quality assurance reports and plotting drawings. Fellenz was present on the construction site daily from June 1996 through May 1997.

Technology, naturally, is to blame. The simultaneous arrival of the mobile phone and laptop means theres no escape. The only solution for hard-pressed senior executives is to switch their phones off and claim they are in a location too remote for a signal. Decorative sills are also available and can be a focal point in a variety of architectural styles. The majority of brick windowsills are built of brick rowlocks. Uncored brick at the ends of the sill look better than exposed core holes. Uncored brick also can be laid as headers. Special shapes–such as those in the photo–are used as windowsills to enhance a buildings appearance. All brick sills should be sloped so that rain is easily directed away from the window. A minimum slope of 3/4 inch, or 15 degrees, is recommended, Coursing should be laid out so that at least 4 3/8 inches are allowed from the top of the brickwork below the sill to the bottom of the window unit when using modular size brick. At least 3 3/8 inches should be allowed with queen and king size brick.
BrickFor the above-cited practical reasons and because it is also an aesthetically pleasing medium, brick has been used as a building material for at least 5,000 years. The first brick was probably made in the Middle East, between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in what is now Iraq. Lacking the stone their contemporaries in other regions used for permanent structures, early builders here relied on the abundant natural materials to make their sun-baked bricks. These, however, were of limited use because they lacked durability and could not be used outdoors; exposure to the elements caused them to disintegrate. The Babylonians, who later dominated Mesopotamia, were the first to fire bricks, from which many of their tower-temples were constructed.
